Close to 20 years ago, an idea was born – we could beat the odds against cancer, together. Motivated by a lifetime of work by University of Bristol’s Professor Stephen Prime and inspired by our common desire to make an impact.
And for that, the Cancer Research Initiatives Foundation (CARIF) was formed.
Today, CARIF has evolved from an anonymous 700 square foot lab on the 5th floor of Subang Jaya Medical Centre to a bustling centre of research, consistently churning our streams of discoveries, papers and patents. As the leading cancer research organization in Malaysia and a significant player in the region, we have collaborated with top scientists from as many as fifteen countries, published 150 scientific papers and registered four patents – all of which describe huge leaps forward in discovering a step by step method in breaking down cancer.
What began as an initiative is now a full – fledged organization, which we can be proud of. A quiet determination along with an unwavering spirit to make a difference is what motivates us to now change our name. Cancer Research Initiatives Foundation is now ‘Cancer Research Malaysia’. Our vision is a future free of the fear of cancer, and our essence is ‘Hope Lives Here’. We believe that we can and WILL find ways to overcome cancer one day.
One thing that we have learned from our journey with CARIF is that to fight cancer, we must also bring fellow Malaysians on this journey. Cancer, the big C, continues to be a stigma and a prevalent fear among people. We believe Cancer Research Malaysia will transform the big C to a little c – and that we will reverse the grip of cancer in our lives. This notion is reflected in our new logo and motto : A flipped ‘c’ with the words ‘reversing cancer’ below. Through the work of our researchers and through our impactful outreach programmes we hope that Malaysians can one day respond differently to cancer – coming forward for screening, presenting early and going through with treatment.
For every Ringgit invested in us, at least 90 cents is invested in research – and we have never failed on this promise in the fifteen years that we have been here. We live by four core values: integrity, diligence, respect and impact; and we strive to be ethically unyielding and we shall be honest to inspire trust in doing what is right even when no one is watching. We are passionate about making a difference in the lives of cancer patients and the public and we are always mindful of our vision and focus our innovative energy on programmes in areas of need in cancer research.
We are hopeful for the future and invite you to join us on the road ahead. Some cancer experts have said that we can cure cancer in 35 years. If we can, we would stay to witness that day. In the meantime, we thank you for your continued support and encourage you to continue your journey with Cancer Research Malaysia.
Together, we will reverse cancer.
