Part of our Breast Cancer Research team is currently in Jeju Island, Korea for the Global Breast Cancer Conference from today (28th) until 30th of April.
Our CEO, Professor Dr Teo Soo-Hwang is one of the invited speaker. As one of the biggest breast cancer conference in Asia, the event aims to draw together scientists, researchers, healthcare providers, advocacy groups and policy makers to increase global awareness of breast cancer, enhance a better understanding of the disease and its medical treatments, and improve the quality of life of breast cancer patients.
One of our team members, Sean, will be there with his abstract entitled “Hi-Plex for High-Throughput Mutation Screening of BRCA1, BRCA2, TP53, and PALB2 in Breast and Ovarian Cancer Patients” that has been selected for an oral presentation. He is also a recipient of the Korean Breast Cancer Foundation Scholarship.
Other than that, our team will be presenting a study entitled, “Genome-wide association study of breast cancer in Malaysian and Singaporean women”.
The study is focusing on Identifying the underlying genetic risk factors of breast cancer may unveil the relevant mechanisms responsible for risk and enable risk stratification. To date, approximately 94 breast cancer susceptibility loci have been identified. A large fraction of these have been through genome-wide association studies (GWAS) in predominantly women of European ancestry. We sought to validate previously identified genetic variants in Chinese, Malay and Indian women living in Malaysia and Singapore using genome-wide data we had through our contribution to the Breast Cancer Association Consortium (BCAC). We confirmed the association of variants near ESR1, CCDC170, FGFR2 and TOX3/CASC16 with breast cancer risk for Asian women in our study.
We wish the best of luck to our team in Korea and do have fun!
UPDATES: Our own Sean Wen gave his presentation entitled “Hi-Plex for High-Throughput Mutation Screening of BRCA1, BRCA2, TP53, and PALB2 in Breast and Ovarian Cancer Patients”. He is also the recipient for KBCF Scholarship Awards.
