5 minutes with our volunteer, Wani
Q: Could you tell us a little bit about yourself?
My name is Nurul Rahwani Binti Razlye, from Ampang and I turn 18 this year. I attended Seri Puteri Science Secondary School (SESERI) where I took on the Science stream such as Biology, Chemistry and Physics among other subjects. My favourite pastimes consists of reading and listening to music.
Q: What inspired you to become a volunteer?
As a child, I was taught that it is essential to help others and make a contribution to society. Because this purpose has been incepted in me at a very young age, it led me in joining Doktor Muda Club in primary school. It taught me a lot especially about taking care of one’s health. Now that I have completed secondary school and with plenty of time to spare, I thought to myself, “I should do something beneficial that allows me to lend a helping hand.” I couldn’t think of a better way to help others than by volunteering.
Q: Why did you choose to volunteer for Cancer Research Malaysia?
I owe it to my friends, Zafirah and Auni for introducing me to CRM because they were the ones who stumbled across CRMY’s website seeking volunteers. The moment I saw the volunteer works offered, I filled in the volunteer form because I knew I had plenty of options and endless possibilities. A few days later, I was contacted by one of CRMY’s staff where I was provided with more details about the tasks I would be involved in.
Q: Can you walk us through your first day of orientation at CRMY’s office in Subang Jaya?
The orientation started with a brief ice-breaking session for the new staff, volunteers and interns. Then began the onboarding session that introduced us to the inner workings of CRMY. After that, there was an office tour where I was introduced to the Donor Engagement and Communications Department. The most memorable part of that day would definitely be the team lunch. It was a great bonding experience and I had fun getting to know my teammates better.
Q: What have you learned over the past 1 month?
Loads of things.! For starters, I gained some self-confidence and understood the importance of teamwork. Meanwhile, as an artist, it has helped improved my graphic designing skills. Aside from that, I have also learned to appreciate what I currently have, especially the little things and not take them for granted.
Q: Even though your time with us is quite brief, did it change you in any way or do you look at things/life differently?
During my time with CRMY, I realised how much thought, effort and support was given to their patients. Seeing such dedication has somewhat altered my perspective in life to consciously recognised that even a small gesture can make a huge impact. Although my time at CRMY was short, I’m glad I was a part of the team because it’s a positive workplace and models the values that it helps to impart to others.
Q: How would you encourage your friends or high school leavers to do more volunteer work?
For starters, I would invite them to join a short-term volunteer programme to perk their interest. Then I would share my experience and explain how it benefitted me. I believe everyone has a different interest so it’s important to encourage my peers to find any volunteer opportunities that they are passionate about or work on a cause close to their hearts.
Q: What is your next plan for the near future?
I plan to further my studies by pursuing a Diploma in Medical Laboratory Technology at the College of Health Sciences (COHES) University Malaya Medical Centre.
Q: What do you want to achieve and what are your life goals?
I aspire to give back to society in hopes of a better future for us all. Any opportunities that have been given to me shall not be wasted. I want to be able to make a difference in someone’s life, even if it’s small.
Q: Will you come back and volunteer for us again?
Of course! I would love to come back and volunteer to help where possible.
