Behind the Lens and Beyond: Meet Syahirah, CRMY’s Visual Storyteller

Every memorable event at Cancer Research Malaysia (CRMY) has a story to tell, and more often than not, Syahirah is the person ensuring those stories are never forgotten. Whether it is a donor visit, community screening, Race Against Cancer, staff celebration or scientific milestone, she is usually found behind the camera, quietly capturing the moments that reflect CRMY’s mission and impact. Beyond photography, she also films videos, creates engaging TikTok and social media content, and plays an active role as part of the Organising Committee (OC), helping to ensure every event runs seamlessly from planning through to execution.

Collaborating with team to plan and deliver impactful initiatives

Having joined CRMY more than three years ago as an Administrative Executive before moving into the Marketing Communications team in 2024, Syahirah has grown into one of the organisation’s most dependable team members. Her background in administration gave her a strong foundation in project coordination, organisation and stakeholder management, skills she now applies in communications, events and content creation.

Although her role spans campaign coordination, site visits and marketing communications, many colleagues know Syahirah as CRMY’s unofficial photographer. However, her contribution extends far beyond the camera. From videography and editing short-form content to supporting event logistics and collaborating with fellow OC members, she is always ready to step in wherever she is needed.

Of course, anyone who knows Syahirah also knows about her camera. Around the office, it is affectionately regarded as her ‘baby’. She looks after it with remarkable care, and colleagues have learnt, usually with a laugh, that borrowing or even casually reaching for it is done at their own risk! If her camera had a bodyguard, it probably wouldn’t need one because Syahirah already fills the role perfectly.

As an introvert, Syahirah is happiest behind the lens rather than in front of it. Whether she is capturing photographs, filming videos or creating digital content for CRMY’s online platforms, she believes that while people may not remember every statistic, they will remember how a story made them feel. Every story she creates helps showcase the people behind CRMY’s work.

Beyond her technical skills, Syahirah is a valued team player. Quiet, dependable and always ready to lend a helping hand, she is someone colleagues know they can rely on during even the busiest events. Whether she is coordinating with fellow OC members, supporting colleagues during events or contributing creative ideas for CRMY’s digital channels, her collaborative spirit makes her an invaluable member of the MarComms team.

Looking ahead, Syahirah hopes to continue growing as a communications professional, take on greater leadership responsibilities and create work that leaves a meaningful impact. Her journey reflects the many facets of modern communications from visual storytelling and videography to social media engagement, teamwork and event management, all contributing to CRMY’s mission.
