Fred Fox Visits Malaysia and Sees Terry Fox’s Legacy in Action
Fred Fox was recently in Malaysia for the first time, where he spent several days engaging with Cancer Research Malaysia (CRMY), Terry Fox Run supporters, and members of the public. His visit offered an opportunity to see how Terry Fox’s legacy continues to support cancer research and community action well beyond Canada.
During his time in Kuala Lumpur, Fred visited CRMY’s laboratories and met with researchers working on cancers that disproportionately affect Asian communities. The visit highlighted how funds that were raised through the Terry Fox Run in Malaysia are translated into ongoing research efforts, which aligned with Terry’s original goal of supporting cancer research that improves survival and quality of life for patients.
Fred also took part in a meet-and-greet session at PARC Subang Jaya, where he spoke about Terry’s life, the Marathon of Hope, and the values that continue to guide the Terry Fox Foundation. For many attendees, the session provided context to a story that they have been supporting for years through participation in the annual Terry Fox Run.
Another special moment during the visit was a morning walk with CRMY staff and Terry Fox Run supporters. The walk reflected the spirit of the Terry Fox Run, being accessible, inclusive, and focused on participation rather than performance. A format that has remained unchanged since Terry first began his run in 1980.
Reflecting on his work over the years, Fred shared that his perspective on Terry’s journey has expanded. While much of his earlier outreach focused on communities across Canada, international travel has shown him how much Terry’s story resonates with people who may have not have any direct connection to Canada, but who share the same hope for better cancer outcomes.
This global connection is evident in Malaysia, where the Terry Fox Run has been held for decades, raising funds exclusively for cancer research. The work carried out by CRMY complements the mission of the Terry Fox Foundation in Canada, with both focused on funding research and supporting collaboration among scientists.
Fred Fox’s visit underscored how Terry Fox’s legacy continues to evolve. Not just as a historical story, but as ongoing support for research, partnerships, and communities working towards better cancer care.
