Growing Hope: The Story of Vinotheni
If you ever step into the Cancer Immunology & Immunotherapy team at CRMY, chances are you will find Vinotheni deeply focused on an experiment, carefully analysing research data, or passionately discussing new ideas that could one day change the future of cancer treatment. But behind the lab coat is a vibrant, energetic soul driven by curiosity, compassion, resilience, and an unwavering belief that science has the power to save lives.

Science is not just her work, it is a part of her purpose.
Vinotheni’s journey into cancer immunology began just two and a half years ago when she joined CRMY. Although she had learned the basics of immunology during her undergraduate years, stepping into the world of cancer research opened up an entirely new universe for her. She became fascinated by the incredible intelligence of the human immune system especially how immune cells can be trained to recognise and attack cancer cells that cleverly hide from the body’s natural defenses.
Today, as a Research Associate in the Cancer Immunology & Immunotherapy team, no two days are ever the same for Vinotheni. Some days are spent carefully growing cancer cells and training immune cells in the laboratory. Other days involve analysing complex data, reviewing scientific literature, and troubleshooting experiments that refuse to cooperate. Research, after all, is rarely straightforward.
And yet, that unpredictability is exactly what excites her.

Research thrives where teamwork grows.
For Vinotheni, every failed experiment is not a defeat; it is a clue, a lesson, and an opportunity to discover something new. She understands that scientific breakthroughs are often hidden behind long hours, repeated trials, and countless moments of uncertainty. What keeps her going is the possibility that one day, her work could contribute to treatments that save cancer patients’ lives.
One of the projects closest to her heart is the development of therapeutic cancer vaccines for breast cancer patients. To her, this is more than just research. It is hope in progress.
She believes immunotherapy will play a major role in the future of cancer treatment in Malaysia and across the region. While immunotherapy is still developing locally, Vinotheni is encouraged by the increasing number of clinical trials and success stories emerging from Malaysia. More importantly, she is inspired by efforts to make these treatments more affordable and accessible for low- and middle-income countries.
But Vinotheni’s world is not limited to microscopes and laboratories.

Home is where Beema is.
Outside work, she is just as passionate about life. On weekends, she enjoys hiking and swimming with her office friends, finding joy and balance in nature. Dancing sessions with her nieces and nephew bring laughter into her home, while her growing love for sustainable organic farming reflects her deep appreciation for interconnected living systems.

Mount Kinabalu: The climb was tough, but so was she.
In fact, her fascination with farming started when she discovered that her ancestors were farmers and caretakers of the land. That connection inspired her to learn forgotten skills, explore food sovereignty, and cultivate healthier, more sustainable food choices for her family.
To Vinotheni, science and gardening are surprisingly similar.
Plants thrive through complex systems of support between soil, roots, microbes, water, and air. Likewise, scientific discoveries happen through interconnected systems of observation, experimentation, collaboration, and learning. This perspective allows her to stay open-minded in research, especially when unexpected results appear. In her eyes, biology always finds a way to adapt and so must scientists.

Cultivating wellness from seed to harvest.
Whether she is nurturing plants or developing research projects, Vinotheni believes growth requires patience, attention, resilience, and care.

Growing patience, one plant at a time.
Above all, what inspires her most are the people around her: her colleagues, her family, and the patients whose stories remind her why this work matters. Every breakthrough in cancer research begins with individuals who dare to keep asking questions and searching for answers.

Building friendships beyond the workplace.
At CRMY, researchers like Vinotheni are working tirelessly behind the scenes to push the boundaries of cancer science forward. But this journey is not possible without the support of generous donors, partners, and supporters who believe in the power of research and innovation.
To every donor and supporter: thank you.
Your contributions are not simply funding research projects, they are empowering passionate researchers like Vinotheni to continue their work, pursue life changing discoveries, and bring hope to countless cancer patients and families.
Every donation helps provide critical resources, sustain groundbreaking research, and create opportunities for scientists to turn ideas into real world impact. Together, we are building a future where better cancer treatments, earlier interventions, and more lives saved become a reality.
Your support truly changes lives, one discovery at a time.
