The Quiet Force Behind Every Discovery: Getting to Know Wong Zhi Lei

Some of the most significant contributions to cancer research are made away from the spotlight. Wong Zhi Lei, Data Manager in Cancer Research Malaysia’s Cancer Prevention & Population Science (CPPS) Department, exemplifies this truth. Quiet, observant and reliable, she is one of the dedicated individuals whose meticulous work ensures that every research finding begins with trustworthy data.

Zhi Lei’s journey began with a Biosciences degree at the University of Queensland, Australia. During the COVID-19 pandemic, she returned to Malaysia and joined CRMY as an intern while completing her studies remotely. That internship introduced her to cancer research, dry-lab science, data management and analysis under supportive supervisors, inspiring her to remain at CRMY after graduation. When a Data Manager position became available, she applied, believing her biological knowledge could complement scientific data management while allowing her to develop analytical skills.

Her fascination with data started at university through RStudio assignments and workshops using real datasets. She discovered that science extends beyond laboratory benches; hidden within data are patterns that answer important scientific questions. Inspired further by a cousin working in research, she realised that data could directly improve lives.

Today, Zhi Lei reviews medical records, extracts clinical information, cleans datasets, resolves inconsistencies, answers data queries and prepares reliable datasets for analysis. Although she rarely meets the patients whose records she manages, she recognises that every data point represents a person, their journey and their hope. She often reflects that one missing or inaccurate piece of information could alter research conclusions, making precision and integrity essential.

For Zhi Lei, the greatest rewards come from continual learning, solving complex data challenges and supporting multidisciplinary research teams. She believes successful data managers must be systematic, organised, analytical, patient, persistent and collaborative, with excellent communication skills.

Among her proudest achievements is pursuing her MPhil while continuing her responsibilities as a Data Manager. Supported by the OHT&OSP Foundation, she worked on improving the ARiCa model for BRCA mutation risk prediction through biostatistical modelling, an entirely new discipline that stretched her technical abilities. Encouraged by dedicated supervisors, she earned an opportunity to undertake training in the United Kingdom and received an international conference presentation award, milestones that strengthened both her expertise and confidence.

One team. One mission. One Reverse C. Standing together in our commitment to reverse cancer.

One particularly meaningful moment came when she saw data she had painstakingly managed contribute to the development of the ARiCa (tool used to predict an individual’s likelihood of carrying a mutated BRCA gene and help inform clinical decisions on whether the individual should be referred for genetic testing) , now supporting clinicians in assessing patients’ cancer risk and informing clinical decisions.

Balancing a demanding role with postgraduate research was not without challenges. Through careful planning, prioritisation and open communication with colleagues and supervisors, she developed stronger organisational and time-management skills while becoming more adaptable and confident.

Looking ahead, Zhi Lei hopes to become an independent researcher specialising in biostatistics, predictive model development and machine learning, while continuing to lead impactful projects at CRMY.

Science paused. Pickleball mode activated. Great games, great teammates, and even greater memories.

Outside work, she enjoys baking, spending time with family and café hopping with friends, especially in search of delicious desserts and a good cup of matcha.

As Zhi Lei aptly describes, data may remain behind the scenes, but it forms the foundation upon which every research discovery is built. Like the unseen screws holding together a structure, accurate data enables meaningful science and carries every patient’s story with dignity and purpose.

Not everything has to be rushed. Sometimes, creating slowly is the most rewarding journey.

Cancer Research Malaysia’s achievements are only possible because of the dedication of individuals like Wong Zhi Lei and the unwavering generosity of our donors, supporters and well-wishers. Your continued trust and contributions enable passionate researchers and professionals to transform data into discoveries, discoveries into better prevention and treatment, and ultimately, hope for countless families. Thank you for standing with us as we continue working towards a future free from the burden of cancer.
