Professor Jon Emery
Professor Jon Emery is the Herman Professor of Primary Care Cancer Research at the University of Melbourne, and the Victorian Comprehensive Cancer Centre Primary Care Research and Education Lead. He is also Director of the Cancer Australia Primary Care Collaborative Cancer Clinical Trials Group (PC4), and a Visiting Research Fellow at the Department of Public Health and Primary Care, University of Cambridge.Professor Aik Choon Tan is the Senior Director of Data Science, Huntsman Cancer Institute, University of Utah, USA.Christian joined the University of Liverpool and the Head and Neck Centre as Professor of Immuno-Oncology in August 2020. He was also appointed as Director of Clinical Research at The Clatterbridge Cancer Centre in 2020. Christian’s core interest is the understanding and improvement of immune responses in patients; his aim is to develop immunotherapies against solid cancers.Dr. Hjh Yatela Zainal Abidin is the Chief Executive Officer of Yayasan Sime Darby (YSD), or the Sime Darby Foundation. YSD is the philanthropic arm of the three Sime Darby companies i.e. Sime Darby Berhad, Sime Darby Plantation Berhad and Sime Darby Property Berhad; which focuses on the 5 pillars of Education, Community & Health, Environment, Sports and Arts & Culture.
Dr. Yatela obtained a Bachelor of Science degree in Accounting and Finance from the University of Wales, Aberystwyth in the United Kingdom. She completed her Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) professional degree at the Emile Woolf College of Accountancy, London; and went on to attain her ACCA fellowship. Yatela completed her doctoral degree in education at Universiti Utara Malaysia. Mr Wong Lup Hang has vast experience in the commercial world having worked and collaborated with diverse nationalities and cultures throughout his career. These experiences spanned global multinationals, mid-sized companies to small but nimble and entrepreneurial family-owned operations.
Mr Wong, also a member of our Scientific Advisory Committee, acts as a patient advocate and puts a human face on vital cancer research that we do here. He brings a much needed and different perspective to the committee to make sure that the research we conduct remains patient oriented. He was appointed as Trustee on 9 February 2021 and will lead efforts to drive public support towards Cancer Research Malaysia.
Mr Wong is also an independent non-executive director on the board of Khind Holdings Berhad and is a board trustee in My Starfish Foundation. Mr. Redza has been with PETRONAS since 1991 and was an integral part of several key projects, holding several positions, including Head of Legal Upstream and Company Secretary of PETRONAS. He is currently the Head of Legal Corporate, Group Legal, PETRONAS.
He has also held various directorship positions within the PETRONAS Group of Companies as well as company secretarial-ship, and is currently a member of the Board of Trustees for Yayasan PETRONAS. He was appointed as Trustee of Cancer Research Malaysia on 23 October 2020As a trained accountant, Fui Fong has worked in a number of German and USA companies in Malaysia and Singapore and she brings with her experience in establishing accounting systems to ensure the operational backbone of Cancer Research Malaysia. Datuk Professor Dr. Looi Lai Meng Distinguished Professor, University of Malaya
YBhg Datuk Professor Dr Looi Lai Meng has been on the Board since July 2018. She is Malaysia’s inaugural Profesor Ulung and consultant histopathologist at the University Malaya Medical Centre. She is the Founding President of the Malaysian College of Pathologists, Founding Fellow and Senior Fellow (Academician) of the Academy of Sciences Malaysia and was instrumental in establishing pathology laboratory accreditation in Malaysia and the Pathology Act.
Her practice and research interests are in nephropathology, cancer pathology and diagnostic innovations. Accolades for her contributions include the ASEAN Outstanding Scientist Award, the Merdeka Award 2016 (Health, Science and Technology category) and Honorary Professor of the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences-Peking Union Medical College. Academician Datuk Professor Dr Lai-Meng Looi is Malaysia’s inaugural National Distinguished Professor, positioned at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Malaya (UM) in Kuala Lumpur. She holds a concurrent appointment as senior consultant histopathologist at the University of Malaya Medical Centre (UMMC). Professor Looi studied medicine as a Malaysian Federal Scholar at the University of Singapore (1970-1975), where she was a medalist in Pathology and Social Medicine, and won the King Edward VII Hall awards for literary works, art forms and poetry. Receiving her First-Class Honours Degree in Biochemistry from the National University Malaysia (UKM), she studies the mechanisms underlying cancer development, particularly focusing on head and neck cancers and utilizing this understanding for the development of novel therapies. Professor Cheong has also developed innovative tools for the early detection and follow-up of patients with high-risk oral lesions and oral cancer.
Professor Cheong has won many international awards. These include the Norman Rowe Educational Trust (2005), L’Oreal For Women in Science Award (2008), the Union for International Cancer Control Fellowships (2006, 2008), Top Research Scientist Malaysia Award (2017), the International Association of Oral & Maxillofacial Pathologists President’s Award (2020), and the TWAS Medal (2022), amongst others. She is highly sought after as a Keynote or Plenary Speaker at international, regional, and local conferences.
She was appointed Adjunct Professor at Universiti Malaya since 2009, Full Professor (Dr. Siti Hasmah Mohd Ali Professorial Chair) at Universiti Malaya in 2019 and Visiting Professor at the Technology University of Malaysia (UTM; 2017). Internationally, she was a Visiting Professor at the University of Khon Kaen, Thailand (2012, 2015), and an Adjunct Professor at Airlangga University, Indonesia (2022). She was appointed as a Fellow of the Academy of Sciences Malaysia in 2019.
